AIGA / WSU Student Club

AIGA / WSU is the Weber State University design chapter of AIGA (American Institute of Graphic Arts). During my time as a contributing member, I was positioned as the graphic designer of the chapter. Our goals for the 2018-2019 school year were to rebrand and increase student involvement through design events, workshops, and design contests.

As the lead graphic designer for the chapter, I created posters for all events, slide-show presentations, and brand guidelines for our new visual identity, with the goal to increase awareness of the university's chapter. Our efforts were successful and we were able to increase student involvement in the club by about 80%.
The Memo Board: To increase student awareness and involvement, we developed a memo board where we hung posters and flyers for upcoming events. It also housed event info as well as information about how to become a member, the current team, and where students could find the chapter on social media.

For all memo boards, we followed brand guidelines and a visual identity system to ensure effective communication and brand positioning. Below is a mockup of the memo board which was about 30x20".
The Professional Development Series: Our goal with the professional development series, was to provide graduating seniors with additional tools, knowledge, and resources for developing their portfolio and positioning themselves as design professionals in the career marketplace.

The series included three events, which were hosted every week for three weeks leading up to graduation. To market the events, we created a series of corresponding posters to inform members and students of upcoming events.
The Poster Competition: As part of one of our weekly events, we held a poster competition with the theme to "design for social good". The goal was to challenge students to create a posters focused on the given theme in under one hour. Each competitor was given a pre-chosen color palette and the theme upon arrival. The posters were later exhibited in the student gallery, where students could come view the work and vote on the poster that they felt best represented the theme "equality".
Equality Poster Competition: For the poster design competition, I chose to focus on censorship equality in the media. My goal for the design was to be suggestive and not too forward. I wanted the audience to be able to approach the design with an open mind and find what it meant to them as individuals.

One of my poster designs was selected to be on the cover of the event poster by the club administrator.
The Gallery: My AIGA / WSU team member and I were tasked with curate the posters for the gallery so they created a cohesive and structured layout that would tell a story and guide the viewer around the gallery. Our goal was to distribute the colors equally throughout the gallery and to tell a story about equality in the 2019 political and social landscape.

Once we created a layout, the entire AIGA / WSU team collaborated to set up the gallery. We measured out the space, hung nails and attached magnets to the front of the posters so that they created a drop-shadow effect when hung. We created a digital voting system and opened the gallery to students. Overall, the event was a success and was effective at increasing student involvement in the university's AIGA chapter.
